Rio de Janeiro means ‘River of January’.

But there’s no river in Rio.

When the Portuguese arrived at the bay, all they saw was a large opening of water cutting between mountains.

To them, it looked like the mouth of a river.

And they arrived in January.

So they named it ‘River of January’
