Escadaria Selarón

In Rio you’ll find the Escadaria Selarón.

A set of colourful mosaic steps that stretch 125 meters.

They were created by a Chilean artist named Jorge Selarón in tribute of Rio.

Selarón traveled the world before settling in Rio in 1983.

And in 1990, he randomly began ‘renovating’ the 200 steps across from his house.

Piece by piece, he transformed the brown dilapidated steps into a colourful work of art.

Something that started as a creative outlet, eventually became a project he dedicated his life to.

As he became more well know, people would bring him tiles from all over the world.

This unknown Chilean painter became a symbol of creativity and inspiration for the city.

Simply by doing things one step at a time.
